I’m spending a few days at home to visit with family and see the kids and grandkids. I dropped my bike off at Outdoor Motion for a little maintenance (thanks Chad) and am doing some route planning and modification for the eastern leg of the trip which starts on Tues (08/30/2022).

Let’s start with the best…I completed the ride at 1:30 PM at East End Beach in Portland ME!!  Tim road with me the last two days (97mi). It was a great way to cap of a long trek, glad he was able to ride along. The ride was through typical New England countryside with plenty of hills and lots of beautiful woods and lakes. As we made our way to the beach, the section along the Portland waterfront/wharf was crowded with tourists checking out all the shops, restaurants and pubs. It was so interesting we went back for a celebratory lobster roll lunch and beers. The earlier portion of the week was a little more challenging. Day 5 - Rest, Day 6 - The Dalles to Crow Butte State Park

  Stats:   Today's miles :   93 miles Today's feet of elevation gain:   3,145 feet Total miles traveled:   311.5 miles Total feet climbed:   13,437 feet It was a really good day of cycling. I was on the road from The Dalles by 6 AM, the forecast high temp had dropped from 94 to 88F (hey little victories) and a 25 mph wind was blowing up-river (tailwind). The ride to Biggs was crazy. There was a section of 3 miles on I84 where I never pedaled, since the wind was strong enough to sustain my normal speed. When I reached Biggs I stopped at the truck stop for a quick breakfast sandwich and coffee before crossing the bridge and beginning the 83 mi “limited services area” run on the Washington side of the river.  Perhaps I was a bit too cocky at that point, because when I came out of the truck stop, my rear tire had relieved itself. Another state off the list! I’m sitting in Rensselaer waiting-out a widespread weather system. I’ve been lucky to only have had 3 weather days so far in the trip. So, its a chance to summarize my ride from western Iowa through Illinois. When I was collecting some thoughts to describe this section of the ride, my first inclination was just to limit the description to ‘nearly endless corn and bean fields’, which would be accurate. But in thinking about it, there are aspects of the heartland that deserve greater appreciation. True, its not the scenic mountain vista, the clear blue lake, or the ocean dunes.
